Olly B is taking electronic dubstep to another level by implementing many of the textures that have drawn so many to the electronica realm without sacrificing the intrinsic style that has made dub so damn popular. Truth be told, I found the intro to be a bit long, but crafty use of onboard filters made the repetitiveness interesting. Once the setup was wrapped and the track began to hit, there was no doubt that the DJ responsible for the composition of the underlying feel knew what it took to create an interesting, yet non-intrusive, rhythm.
In many circles, electronic music still revolves around BPMs that make your head spin. However, much to the average music enthusiast’s liking, we are noticing more and more artists taking things down a notch, adding the dub element, and expanding the range of the genre as a whole. Great synths, catchy hook vocals, and an incredible monologue-esque freestyle give “Dying 2 Live” a feel that is hard to match.
Once the track concluded, I immediately gave it another run, which is common when looking to fully grasp the track itself and the goals of the creators. Something that I must tell everyone who listens to this track: be sure to give it a second run, as the layers shown here will jump out at you time and again. I felt like I was listening to an entirely new composition on the second pass, which is always a sign that the composers, artists, and producers, knew exactly what they were doing. Great job guys.
