As modern music continues to push the boundaries of composition techniques and technology, yet another composer armed simply with a calculator enters the mix. Quartus Saul, the German-born composer/producer joins Dubstep onslaught with his latest release “Tally Ho VIP”, lending an abstract perspective to an already abstract art form to anyone who will listen. Will you? We did, and we enjoyed it…
The matrix approach to composition is nothing new in music theory circles, but its reemergence with modern technology continues to “freshen” the sound. Initially, the mathematical approach to note selection is apparent. But, don’t let that fool you into believing that what you hear is mere chance. In fact, the level of production is astounding when you consider that Quartus Saul is self-produced. It’s a fine line between composing and producing, and all of the best ones are able to manage both. I’m a composer…and I definitely can’t produce.
Sound selection is what is now causing dubstep fanatics to give tracks a second listen. The glitch-oriented break beats are always awe-inspiring, but drawing attention to the tone implementation is what separates the gifted from the talented. Tally Ho VIP does just that.
Is it intentional that the harpsichord patch seems to pay homage to centuries past? That is a question we’ll leave for the artist to answer, but from the moment the patch began, I immediately felt a kinship between modern composition techniques that those that have inspired us for generations.
From the outstanding use of breaks to the intelligent design showcased by smooth and witty matrix choices, the electronic genre will continue to develop provided that composers such as this continue to release tracks that cause the industry to stop and enjoy.
In other words, Bach would be proud… I’m sure Quartus Saul is.
